I am often asked questions such as:
What should I say to an employer?
What details should I provide when asked questions by a representative?
What’s the best way to stand out to employers?
I often say to students, don’t give them your shoe size, it’s too personal, especially if you have just met. All kidding aside, it’s important to provide just the right amount of information in a deliberative way, but it can be tough to figure out exactly what to say.
First, assess which industries you are hoping to speak to at an upcoming event. Do you know the industry as a whole and why you want to work in that industry?
Industry doesn’t necessarily mean you will major according to industry. Many people use their MAJOR within an industry of choice. One example would be working for a customer facing company and applying an accounting degree in the actual accounting department for the customer facing organization.
Once you know the industry, begin the research according to location, company size, opportunities, etc. Spend some time thinking about what knowledge and/or skills, you hope to apply to the organization(s).
What are 5 key points about your knowledge and/or skills you can share with a representative? If you are not sure conduct research on the industry and/or the position(s). One new and useful tool is the career center website under the ‘Explore Career Paths’ tab. Select your career path and scroll to the Career Search Trends and filter for industry and occupation. Use the drop-down menu and select an occupation. It takes a moment, and these areas can be viewed to generate ideas for your key points: Occupation Description, Education Levels, Technical Skills, Core Competencies.
One you understand what it takes, the skills and abilities you have acquired, or wish to acquire while here as a student, you will have something terrific to say about yourself to the employers and in turn, stand out….without giving a shoe size!
