You and another candidate have the same major.
A similar GPA.
Comparable coursework.
So how do employers decide who gets the offer?
According to NACE’s Job Outlook 2026 report, internship experience is the most influential factor when choosing between equally qualified candidates.
On a 5-point influence scale (where 5 = extreme influence), employers rated:
- Completed internship with their organization: 4.5
- Internship experience within the industry: 4.3
Those were the only two attributes rated in the “very much influence” range.
Now here’s what might surprise you:
- Major: 3.8
- General work experience: 3.6
- Leadership positions: 3.5
- Extracurricular involvement: 3.3
- High GPA (3.0 or higher): 2.9
Yes, GPA ranked last.
While academics still matter, employers are clearly prioritizing applied experience. Internships show that you can transfer classroom knowledge into real-world impact. They demonstrate professionalism, communication skills, adaptability, and the ability to contribute to a team.
Internships also reduce hiring risk. If you’ve already worked in a professional setting — especially within the company or industry — employers feel more confident in your readiness.
