How to Turn One Career Expo Conversation Into an Internship

Career Expos can feel intimidating. The space is crowded, recruiters are moving quickly, and it can feel like you only have a few seconds to make an impression. Many students walk in thinking they need to speak with every employer in the room for the event to be worthwhile.

In reality, you don’t need twenty rushed conversations. One meaningful conversation, combined with thoughtful follow-through, can open the door to real opportunities.

Recruiters attend Career Expos to meet students who are prepared and curious about their organizations. While it may seem like the goal is to hand out as many resumes as possible, what truly stands out is how you show up to the conversation. Taking a few minutes beforehand to research companies, understand their work, and think about what interests you can make a big difference.

When you approach an employer, it helps to introduce yourself with intention. Share your major, your interests, and what caught your attention about their organization. Even referencing a recent project, initiative, or company value shows that you’ve done your homework and are genuinely interested.

Strong conversations also come from asking thoughtful questions. Instead of focusing only on whether they are hiring, consider asking questions like:

  • What qualities make students successful in your internship program?
  • What skills do you look for when evaluating candidates?
  • What advice would you give someone hoping to enter this field?

Questions like these create a more engaging conversation and help you learn what employers truly value.

It’s also important to remember that employers are looking for students who bring skills, curiosity, and professionalism to the table. Your coursework, projects, internships, and campus involvement all help demonstrate what you can contribute. Being able to briefly speak about your experiences and what you’ve learned shows confidence and preparation.

Where many students miss an opportunity, however, is what happens after the Career Expo.

Following up within 24 hours can help you stand out. A short LinkedIn message thanking the recruiter for their time and referencing something specific from your conversation can help them remember you. When your application appears later, your name will already feel familiar.

Career Expos are not about perfection or speaking with every employer in the room. They are about building connections, demonstrating your skills and interests, and following through afterward.

One strong conversation, combined with preparation and a thoughtful follow-up, can make all the difference in turning a brief interaction into your next internship opportunity.
