Why take a Career Assessment?

Are you still not sure about what career path you’d like to pursue? Career assessments can provide meaningful information about these factors that can build a foundation for choosing or changing a major and finding a career path that you can commit to with enthusiasm. Understanding your skills, interests, and values are an important part of finding confidence about your career direction. Being able to identify your energizing skills, your sustainable interests and your valued outcomes is an integral part of the career development process.

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®)  The most widely used personality assessment in the world. It offers a foundation for understanding individual differences and applying that understanding to the ways people think, communicate, and interact.

The Strong Interest Inventory (SII)  Reflects your interests in relation to occupations. It does not test your skills nor abilities. The SII instrument is a powerful tool that can help you make satisfying decisions about your career and education.

The StrengthsQuest (SQ)  Gives students and educators the opportunity to develop strengths by building on their greatest talents. With SQ, participants can discover their greatest natural talents, gain insight about their most effective learning style and strategically determine a rewarding career path based on who they are as uniquely talented individuals.

The Career Center is currently offering MBTI, SII, and SQ career assessments free of charge to Cal Poly Pomona active students. Follow the instructions below to request an assessment.

Please note: Assessments are not distributed for class assignments without a scheduled workshop. Students may take the free assessments for MBTI and SII in the “Additional Assessments” Section for a course assignment.

  2. After your appointment, the Career Coach will submit a referral for any assessments suggested to the Career Center Information desk.
  3. You will receive an email with instructions to complete your assessment after your appointment. Department Offices, Courses, or Organizations

  1. If you are interested in having students in your department or organization take the StrengthsQuest assessment, you will need to schedule a Strengths Quest Workshop. A Career Specialist will host the workshop to share more information about the career assessment and interpret the assessment results with your students so that they better understand how to use this information. Please note: The Career Center is currently only offering workshops for SQ career assessments.
  2. Schedule a workshop through the Collaboration Request Form
  3. Your students will be emailed instructions to complete their SQ assessment. Students are expected to complete the assessment before attending the workshop and have access to their results. Please refer to the “Need to Know!” section to assist in your planning.

A follow up appointment will be scheduled with a career counselor to review your assessment results. Students will receive their results after completing the assessment requirements. To best understand the results of your career assessment, we highly recommend scheduling a Career Counseling appointment. Select the “Career Exploration” meeting type.

Consider other FREE career assessments to assist you in career exploration.
