What you Need to Know about Job Searching

Gaining applicable knowledge in the classroom at Cal Poly Pomona occurs throughout your journey.  Career Readiness is intertwined in activities that prepare you for the workforce.  Students are encouraged to engage in various experiences outside of the classroom including on campus, off campus jobs, internships, and community engagement.

Benefits to job or internship engagement

  • Solidifying your major is in alignment with your career aspirations.
  • First-hand learning from professionals in the industry of interest.
  • Gain, develop, career readiness skills in a professional workplace.

Looking for a job or internship?

  • Use your Handshake account to find multiple options.
  • Options for Interviews, Information Sessions and Events are all listed through Handshake.
  • Log-in to your Handshake account to find all options.  You are encouraged to meet with a career coach as you navigate these steps.

How long will it take you to secure a job or internship?

Think about this in terms of the Job Search Continuum.  As you respond to job listings, attend various Job fairs, volunteering and/or community service activities, you are creating your own network.  This helps you with a variety of job search methods including networking on your own time or throughout job or internship activities.

Set aside time for each while attending Cal Poly Pomona.  You will learn about career options, develop a resume, and cover letter while learning to tailor them, evaluate positions and interests, apply, and follow-up with individuals you meet.

Set goals for yourself

  • I want an on-campus (or off campus) job by this date.
  • I want to attend x number of events this semester.
  • I hope to find an internship by x date, for the industry I’d like to pursue.
  • Be mindful every career field/industry has specific recruiting timelines!  Review Handshake often for dates and opportunities.
  • Internships
