What is Networking?
In simple terms, networking is People talking to each other, sharing ideas, information, potential resources, job, or internship leads, and more! Although Networking is a great way to interact with people, you may not walk away with a job but you may get several promising leads. It’s a great way to network with employer representatives and alumni, who are working in the industry of your choice, AND you might also identify employers that you weren’t aware of. Don’t forget to gather business cards or info for future follow-up with individuals you meet.Â

This technique can be used when reaching out to potential employers to gather info about a career or role. Although, not a job interview, it’s an exchange of information about potential careers you are interested in and what are best practices to obtain future opportunities in this industry.
Introduce yourself and request a few minutes of that individual’s time to ask questions about their career walk and/or the organization. Show genuine interest in the person, hopefully it is an alum. Respect other people’s time and privacy. Be focused during your conversation and be an attentive listener. Always follow up with an email, a note or a card thanking them for their time.
