Explore Your Career

We are glad you are seeking information about exploring your career. As a student there are multiple choices that will provide you so many options for your future. Do you have a clear plan about what you are going to do once you graduate? You have a career path that supports with your interests and goals? As you probably know, there are so many paths and jobs, many more haven’t yet been discovered, and maybe you feel unsure about how to find what you are seeking. This is where we suggest researching occupations ( Onet ) and industries (OOH) associated with your goal. Did you know many people will change careers a few times over their working life? Most careers are not a straight line from point A to point B. You can pivot your career path as you go along, and if you want to change the path you have that option. Some people need to begin one occupation, gain necessary skills, then ultimately get to the goal.

Use this self-reflection activity to answer questions which provide you a sense of what you may want to pursue.

What schooling/major is required that I need to complete?

What type of experience do I need: part time on campus job, off-campus job, volunteer work, or internship?

Is there an alum who can provide me some additional information about the career? Perhaps an Informational Interview would be useful (Bronco Mentoring Network link) or alumni on LinkedIn. A mentor provides advice and guides you. Perhaps your mentor will know people in the field you are pursuing. This could be another Informational Interview opportunity to learn more.

The opportunity to volunteer or intern with an organization can prove very rewarding. Both provide students with experience. This will help to solidify your goal or realize it’s not the career path for you.

Either way, these experiences help your resume content. Make sure to view Handshake (hyperlink) and Center for Community Engagement (hyperlink) for these opportunities.

Perhaps an Assessment (hyperlink to assessment page) will provide you a better sense of career direction.
